The Sukhoi Su-57 is Russia's first stealth fighter and when introduced in 2019 will the only such aircraft in service outside the US. The Su-57 has its origins in the PAK-FA (Perspektivny Aviatsionny Kompleks Frontovoy Aviatsii) program, also known by the internal company designation T-50, which intended to design a fifth generation fighter to compete against the F-22. The Su-57 will incorporate many of the advances of earlier Sukhoi designs, namely the Flanker, such as supermaneuverability, supercruise, thrust-vectoring nozzles, and extensive use of composite materials. Stealth is achieved through the use of planform alignment, radar-absorbent material (RAM), and radar blockers for the engine inlets. However, the rear fuselage does not appear to incorporate any radar deflecting characteristics and as such, the Su-57 is likely to only be stealthy from a frontal perspective. Weapons will be carried in an internal bay but up to six external hardpoints can be fitted for non-stealthy missions. Air-to-air weapons will include the most recent versions of the R-73 (AA-10) and R-77 (AA-12) missiles, as well as air-to-surface, anti-ship, and anti-radiation missiles even though its main mission is air superiority. Other features include a modern glass cockpit with a helmet-mounted sight, an N-036 AESA radar system (the first to be fitted on a Russian fighter), an IRST sensor, as well as an advanced ECM suite. The Russian air force is expected to initially field at least 60 Su-57s but with possible export orders as well. An Su-57 derivative known as the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) is currently being developed between Sukhoi and HAL of India.
Following numerous design delays, first flight of the T-50 prototype took place on 29 January 2010. Up to 10 pre-production aircraft have been built or are planned before the production Su-57 enters service in 2019. The Su-57 has not yet received a NATO code name.
