The Luchs (Lynx) is an armored amphibious reconnaissance vehicle that originated from the same development program that later led to the Fuchs APC. Designed tor replace the M41 and SPz 11-2 Kurz in German Army service, the Luchs is a conventional 8 x 8 design with various armament configurations with or without a Rheinmetall TR-7 turret fitted with a 20-mm cannon, a similar configuration to the Marder IFV. Armor protection is enough to defend against small-arms fire and shrapnel, and consists of an all-welded steel hull while the turret features spaced armor. All crew members are provided with periscopes and hatches, with a main entry hatch located between the wheels on the left side. Amphibious capability is provided thanks to two propellers under the hull, and aside from its watertight integrity is also NBC protected. The German Army has been the only user of the Luchs, and combat experience has been limited to peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia. It is gradually being replaced with the Fennek.

The first production Spähpanzer Luchs was completed in mid-1975 and delivered to the German Army later that year. SEM 80/90 radios were added to what became the Luchs A1 while an upgrade in 1982 resulted in existing vehicles receiving thermal night vision equipment and designated Luchs A2. A GPS navigation system, along with other equipment upgrades, were added to units serving in Bosnia.
