The VBCI (Véhicule Blindé de Combat d'Infanterie) is the French Army's most recent IFV, designed to gradually replace the AMX-10P. In contrast to most other IFVs, the VBCI is wheeled (8 x 8) which offers the advantage of greater speed, mobility, and ease of maintenance compared to tracked vehicles like the AMX-10P. The hull is of welded aluminum but with modular steel and titanium armor, providing protection for up to 14.5-mm ammunition and IEDs to the crew of three and up to eight fully-equipped troops who dismount via a power-operated ram p in the rear. Armament is based on a 25-mm M811 gun, the same found on some versions of the AMX-10P but mounted on a new Dragar turret. Amphibious capability and NBC protection is also afforded, and networking capability is provided through the SIT terminal information system (based on a similar system on the Leclerc MBT) which can integrate with the chain of command. Additionally, it can be air transported on the A400M. Currently, about 500 VBCI's are in service with the French Army and export orders are being considered at the moment, notably by Spain.

The VBCI began life as a potential collaboration with Germany and the UK, but was later developed independently. The basic combat variant is known as the VBCI/VCI, and there is also a command post version designated VBCI/VPC which lacks the 25-mm cannon (which is replaced by a 12.7-mm machine gun). A troop transport is known as the VBCI/VTT, with a larger interior volume capable of carrying up to 10 troops.
